Your Customers Are Asking AI Now. Are You in the Answer?

July 21, 2026 · Kirk DeViere

Someone in Fayetteville needs a commercial printer. Two years ago they searched Google, looked at three results, and clicked one.

Today there’s a decent chance they asked ChatGPT, or read Google’s AI summary and never scrolled. They got a recommendation. If you weren’t in it, you never knew the search happened — no impression, no click, nothing in your analytics. Just a customer who went somewhere else for reasons you can’t see.

That’s the shift, and it’s the most consequential thing to happen to search visibility in a decade.

The numbers

Roughly two-thirds of Google searches now end without a click, according to a Search Engine Land analysis published this year. When an AI Overview appears, that figure climbs substantially higher. The share of searches producing at least one click has fallen meaningfully since 2024.

There’s a more encouraging finding alongside it: brands cited inside AI Overviews earn noticeably more organic clicks than uncited brands on the same query. Being in the answer is worth something concrete.

So the goal shifts. It used to be rank on page one. Now it’s be in the answer — and page one rankings are still one of the main ways you get there, which is why this isn’t a reason to abandon SEO.

Worth verifying these figures against the source before this publishes — the studies get updated.

What actually gets you cited

The mechanics are less mysterious than the vendors selling “AI optimization” would like you to think. Five things matter, and four of them are things a well-run local business should be doing anyway.

1. Answer questions directly, in plain language. Language models quote clean, self-contained statements. A sentence like “Most commercial print jobs in the Fayetteville area take three to five business days” can be lifted and cited. Three paragraphs of throat-clearing before you get to the point cannot. Lead with the answer.

2. Be consistent about who you are and where. Your business name, address, and phone number should be byte-for-byte identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, and every directory you appear in. Models resolve entities by cross-referencing sources. Inconsistency makes you harder to identify as a single, real business.

3. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and current. For local queries, AI answers lean heavily on structured local data. Hours, categories, service areas, photos, reviews. This remains the highest-return hour of local SEO work available, and it’s free.

4. Add an `llms.txt` file. A plain text file at your domain root describing what your business does, what you offer, and where to find your key pages. Think of it as a sitemap written for AI systems. It takes about fifteen minutes and the whole category of paid tools that generate one for you is charging for those fifteen minutes.

5. Let the AI crawlers in. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended. You can block them in `robots.txt`. We’d advise against it for most businesses — blocking removes you from the answers entirely, and for a local service business, being findable beats being protected from summarization.

Measure it the boring way

There’s a growing market in AI visibility dashboards. Most of them are early, expensive, and directionally accurate at best.

The free version works fine: once a month, ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google’s AI mode the five questions a prospect would actually ask. Best marketing agency in Fayetteville NC. Who does web design near Fort Bragg. Top PR firms in eastern North Carolina. Write down whether you appear and who does.

Five minutes, a spreadsheet, and you’ll know more about your actual AI visibility than most dashboards will tell you. Do it monthly and you’ll see the trend.

What hasn’t changed

Nearly everything, which is the part that gets lost in the noise.

The businesses showing up in AI answers are, overwhelmingly, the ones that were already ranking well. Clear content, a fast site, real reviews, consistent listings, and a Google Business Profile someone maintains. The fundamentals didn’t get replaced — they got another use.

What did change is the payoff structure. You can now be found, considered, and rejected without a single visit to your website. That makes the accuracy of your public information — hours, services, service area, reviews — more load-bearing than it used to be, because it’s being read by something that will summarize it without ever sending the customer to check.

Where to start this week

Search your own business name in ChatGPT and see what it says. Then check your Google Business Profile for anything out of date.

That’s the whole assignment. Most businesses find at least one thing wrong, and fixing it costs nothing.
